Can you please introduce yourself?
My name is David Richards. I am the CEO of atmail.
Can you share a quick overview of your previous experience?
So, I came from Synchronoss, and before Synchronoss I followed the bouncing ball through Mirapoint and Critical Path and Openwave, and eventually landed at Synchronoss before it was time to move on to a really great company like atmail.
What’s atmail’s current focus, and future direction?
Yes, so right now, where the company’s focussed on, is just being the number one white label cloud [email] provider to telcos.
At the moment, that’s focused on email. I want to go beyond email. I believe there’s a huge opportunity for us to enable our customers, in their markets. Whether it be through identity management, or whether it be through cloud-based DNS services, but really, it’s about transforming their network, [and] transforming how they do business, to take advantage of all the tremendous opportunities that are available to them in this cloud environment.
Are telcos moving to the cloud?
If we look in the telco space who’re adopting cloud, we have some wonderful leaders in that space, you know the people like Singtel, Swisscom, British Telecom, maybe even SoftBank – you know big global leaders in this space – they’re moving to the cloud, they’re adopting the cloud, because they see what it can offer them. It offers them the ability [to] move quickly, they can be fast, they can satisfy their customers. You know, they don’t have to wait for that five, ten-year cycle of going through an RFP and buying some equipment and putting in the corner. They’re being nimble – and that’s why they need a nimble partner like atmail.
Should telcos run email platforms?
What they need to understand is what they do well, and what they don’t; what are they bringing to the party, and what should someone else bring to the party? They have core competencies – and the partner network available to them has a whole bunch of other core competencies they should be leveraging. For atmail, we’re messaging experts, and so while we have aspirations to offer other services other than email into the telco environment, right now we’re the email experts. Why would a telco run their own platform? Why would they not have experts run it for them, while they go and focus on their core competencies (their marketing, getting their customers, running the network, running the billing systems)?
